In
1944, Lamar School graduated its last class. New district lines were drawn and students moved to Centuria or Saint Croix Falls.
Although Lamar was no longer used as a school, it remained vital as a community center.
In
1968, the Lamar-Sunshine Homemakers entered into a lease with the School District of Saint Croix Falls and thus began almost
three decades of festive fun-raising and community events – pie socials, carnivals, talent shows, harvest dinners, bake
sales.
In
1999, the homemakers disbanded. A new group emerged which became the present board. The School District of Saint Croix Falls
sold the building and property to Lamar Community Center, Inc for $1 December of 1999. Lamar gained its nonprofit 501©3 status
in April of 2000. A membership drive funded by PBEC – Operation Round-up affirmed the project. Grants and donations
followed from the Preservation Services Fund, Jeffris Family Foundation, Saint Croix Falls Lions, SCAARY, Operation Round-up,
Wal-Mart and many generous members. Enthusiasm for the project continues as volunteers come forward with wonderful ideas and
promising vision for the future of Lamar.
